“Les Mers Rouges” is a post modern epic enacting a Sephardic Jewish family's exile from the Spanish Inquisition to the Holocaust. This powerful survival story is an honest portrayal of Jewish resistance in an often-misunderstood historical struggle. As a model for life it has great resonance with the challenges facing contemporary youth and immigrant communities.

The Collective For Living Theatre has formed to produce an original Canadian theatrical experience of Liliane Atlan's “Les Mers Rouges”. The Canadian Premier will take place at the Toronto Fringe Festival at the Artword Theatre, 75 Portland Street, on July 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 2005 directed by Genie Winning Kalli Paakspuu. Our production will be an English World Premier and a Canadian Premier in both English and French. We are working with bilingual actors and making plans for a French run at Glendon College, York University later this year. I addition, a film version of the project is in pre-production.

“Les Mers Rouges” was recently performed at Le Festival d'Avignon, France, the pre-eminent theatre festival of the Francophone world, where it met great critical acceptance, and has also been recorded for broadcast by Radio France.

To produce this extraordinary theatre in Canada, the project is seeking support from both the public and private sector. The Collective for Living Theatre, in association with Calipix Productions and High Park Youth House, is currently raising the funds needed to support these activities. By aligning your organization with this project you will receive immediate exposure in Toronto during the Toronto Fringe Festival and national or international exposure through future performances in both English and French and the motion picture production.
